Soccer

Soccer is my favorite sport... obviously.

I've been playing since I was about four years old, at least.  I might have played with a soccer ball earlier in life, but when my brother and I were four, that's when we started playing community soccer with other kids our age.  From then, we stayed in community soccer until we got into middle school.

Our first middle school had a soccer team that we actually got onto as sixth graders, then we moved at the start of seventh grade.  Despite starting school after tryouts, the soccer coach at that middle school gave us a place on the team after playing scrimmage soccer in gym class.  It made some kids mad, and they still have a beef with us because of that, but it's not like we did it on purpose.  I should also mention that that team was co-ed, which was kind of cool, because some of the girls were really awesome players!

Now in high school, my brother and I were two of the three sophomores to make the varsity team this past season - and there's a rumor that I'm up for captain next year.  I don't know if I'd want to be captain, or if the rumor is even true, but it's nice to know that the team and coach like me enough to consider it.  It doesn't matter to me if I'm a captain or not - I just want to be able to play the game.

As I mentioned, in middle school we had co-ed teams, but obviously now in high school we have a boys' team and a girls' team.  It kind of sucks because I miss playing with some of my old middle school teammates, and some of them miss playing with us.  That's why in the off-season we try to get together on nice days to play some pick-up soccer games.  There's always something we can learn from each other because our teams play differently.  And in those pick-up games I get to play other positions than just goalie - not that I don't love being goalie, but it's nice to have variety in my life.

I really can't wait for next season.

  2. I Looooove soccer! we call it football here (or rather Koora in Arabic), and it sucks because I rarely find girls who know anything about the game to have some steamy conversations with. I never played it, only my very competitive mean older brothers :p I'm a runner, but I loved everything about your post. Thanks you very much for sharing, and I'm happy to discover your blog in this challenge.
